The numbers in brief
About 45% of all email sent in 2025 was spam, according to Kaspersky. The FBI received 191,561 phishing complaints in 2025, more than for any other crime type, and logged $3.05 billion in business email compromise losses. Have I Been Pwned now holds 17.8 billion breached accounts, and the most widely used open-source blocklist of disposable email domains lists 9,963 of them.
This page collects the email spam, phishing, breach and disposable email statistics we kept looking up while writing the rest of this blog. Every figure has a named source, a date and a link, so you can check it and cite it without digging through a vendor PDF.
We run an inbound-only temporary email service, so these numbers describe the world our mail servers work in. We have kept the list short on purpose. Where two reports disagreed, or where we could only find a number on a site that did not name its source, we left it out.
Key takeaways
- Nearly every second email is spam. Kaspersky measured 44.99% of global email traffic as spam in 2025.
- Phishing keeps climbing. APWG observed 1,069,681 phishing attacks in Q2 2026, up 10.1% on the quarter before.
- Email fraud costs billions. Business email compromise was the second most expensive crime reported to the FBI in 2025, at $3.046 billion.
- Your address is probably already out there. 1,041 of the 1,048 breaches in Have I Been Pwned include email addresses.
- Sites block throwaway domains at scale. One shared open-source blocklist names 9,963 disposable email domains.
How much email the world sends
The Radicati Group publishes the figures most other reports quote for email users and daily volume. Its latest public edition came out in late 2024, so the 2025 and 2026 numbers below are its projections.
| Statistic | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Email users worldwide, 2025 | 4.59 billion | Radicati Group, Email Statistics Report 2024-2028 (projection) |
| Emails sent and received per day, 2025 | 376.4 billion | Radicati Group, Email Statistics Report 2024-2028 (projection) |
| Emails sent and received per day, 2026 forecast | 392.5 billion | Radicati Group, Email Statistics Report 2024-2028 (projection) |
How much of that email is spam
Spam share depends on who is counting. Kaspersky measures it across the mail its products filter, and its definition includes scams, phishing and malware as well as plain unsolicited advertising.
| Statistic | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Share of global email traffic that was spam, 2025 | 44.99% | Kaspersky, annual spam and phishing report, February 2026 |
| Malicious or unwanted email attachments blocked, 2025 | More than 144 million, up 15% on 2024 | Kaspersky, February 2026 |
| Attacks on businesses that start with phishing | About 1 in 10 | Kaspersky, February 2026 |
Phishing and email fraud
Two sources track phishing from different angles. APWG counts unique phishing sites and campaigns reported by its members. The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) counts complaints from victims in the United States, which makes it a floor: most victims never file one.
| Statistic | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Phishing attacks observed, Q2 2026 | 1,069,681 | APWG Phishing Activity Trends Report, Q2 2026 (August 2026) |
| Phishing attacks observed, Q1 2026 | 971,181 | APWG Phishing Activity Trends Report, Q1 2026 (May 2026) |
| Phishing attacks observed, all of 2025 | About 3.8 million | APWG, 2025 year in review |
| Phishing and spoofing complaints to the FBI, 2025 | 191,561, the most reported crime type | FBI IC3, 2025 Internet Crime Report (April 2026) |
| Business email compromise losses reported to the FBI, 2025 | $3.046 billion from 24,768 complaints | FBI IC3, 2025 Internet Crime Report (April 2026) |
| All internet crime losses reported to the FBI, 2025 | $20.877 billion from 1,008,597 complaints | FBI IC3, 2025 Internet Crime Report (April 2026) |
Data breaches that expose email addresses
Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) is the largest public index of breached accounts. We summed its public breach list ourselves on the date shown. The Verizon and DLA Piper figures come from their 2026 reports.
| Statistic | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Breached accounts indexed by Have I Been Pwned | 17,846,896,404 across 1,048 breaches | HIBP public breach API, counted 30 October 2026 |
| Breaches in HIBP that exposed email addresses | 1,041 of 1,048 | HIBP public breach API, counted 30 October 2026 |
| Confirmed breaches involving the human element | 62%, up from 60% a year earlier | Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report 2026 |
| Confirmed breaches involving a third party | 48%, up from 30% a year earlier | Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report 2026 |
| Personal data breach notifications per day in Europe | 443, up 22% from 363 | DLA Piper GDPR Fines and Data Breach Survey, January 2026 |
Disposable email
Nobody publishes reliable usage figures for disposable email across the industry, and we do not publish ours. What can be measured is how hard sites push back. The open-source disposable-email-domains list on GitHub is the blocklist most sign-up forms and validation libraries copy, so its size is a fair proxy.
| Statistic | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Domains on the open-source disposable-email-domains blocklist | 9,963 | GitHub, disposable-email-domains, counted 30 October 2026 |
| GitHub stars on that blocklist, a rough sign of how many developers reuse it | 5,645 | GitHub, 30 October 2026 |
| PureTempMail mailbox lifetime (our configuration, not usage data) | 1 hour, extendable to 24 hours | PureTempMail server settings |
| PureTempMail maximum message size (our configuration, not usage data) | 1 MB including attachments | PureTempMail server settings |
Spam laws and fines
In the United States, the CAN-SPAM Act sets a maximum penalty for each email that breaks it. In the EU, spam and tracking fall under the GDPR and the ePrivacy rules, and fines are set case by case.
| Statistic | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum US CAN-SPAM penalty for each non-compliant email | $53,088 | FTC, 2025 inflation adjustment, kept for 2026 |
| Total GDPR fines since May 2018 | €7.1 billion, to 10 January 2026 | DLA Piper GDPR Fines and Data Breach Survey, January 2026 |
| Largest single GDPR fine | €1.2 billion, Meta Platforms Ireland, 2023 | DLA Piper GDPR Fines and Data Breach Survey, January 2026 |
How we picked these numbers
- Primary sources first. Each figure comes from the organisation that measured it. Where we could only read the figure in press coverage of a report, the coverage had to agree across several outlets before we used it.
- The latest edition. We use the most recent report each source has published as of the update date at the top of this page. Projections are labelled as projections.
- Counts we ran ourselves are dated. The Have I Been Pwned and GitHub figures change daily. We record the date we counted them.
- Vendor telemetry measures the vendor's customers. Kaspersky's spam share describes the mail its filters see. That is a large sample but not the whole internet.
- What we left out. Figures with no named source, figures that contradicted the source's own release, and anything about PureTempMail usage. We keep no archive of mailboxes, so we have no usage history to report.
